Make It Bicol!
Bicol Region, home of the famed Mount Mayon, is composed of 6 provinces and 7 cities. It has a total land area of roughly 18,130 square kilometers. Population, in 2000, reached 4.7 million, with an average annual growth rate of 1.68%.

Debunking the usual perception, Bicol’s economy is growing by leaps and bounds. From 5.2% in 2003, the region sustained its growth momentum by posting an accelerated 6.2% expansion in 2004. The key cities of Naga and Legazpi were ranked by the Asian Institute of Management’s Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project, in 2005, as among the top 10 most competitive small cities in the country.

The region’s economy is currently based mainly on light industry and agriculture. With its strategic location in the archipelago, Bicol is accessible by land, air and sea transport. Firms’ markets extend to Metro Manila and the Southern Tagalog region, and the Visayas. Mining is also a major economic contributor. Naga City and Legzpi are part of the Philippines’ CyberServices Corridor. Bicol is likewise the site of 2 major geothermal fields that contribute substantially to the Luzon Power Grid.

The region’s telecommunications network consists of wired and wireless technologies. Communication lines range from landlines using fiber optic networks and cell sites for mobile phones. An array of radio and television networks, postal services, Internet Service Providers and cable networks have grown in number.

Bicol prides itself in having a literacy rate of 96%, with schools and universities at par with those in Manila.
